An insured can request a cancellation or insurance carrier can enforce a cancellation that could be caused by changes of underwriting, late payments, or insurance market conditions. When canceling an existing in forced policy by the insured or insurer, there are 3 types of cancellation: Flat, Pro-Rata or Short Rate.
Flat
The cancellation date is the same as the effective date or the date when the policy begins, thus no premium charge or penalty will apply by the insurance carrier. This cancellation request could be done by the insured or insurer. A full refund will be reimbursed back to insured if any premium has been paid.
Pro-Rata
The cancellation date happens before the expiration date of policy by the request of the insured, non-payment, or the insurance carrier. The premium charge to the policy will be adjusted exactly to how long the policy is active. Any excess premium will be refunded back to the insured.
Short Rate
The cancellation date happens mid-term or before the expiration date of the policy. The insurance carrier imposes a surcharge or a penalty, thus reducing any refunds or premiums paid to the insured.
Depending on the cancellation terms of the policy and how a policy is canceled, the insurance carrier will apply the appropriate cancellation type.
