What is a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)?
Many people use the term nursing home, convalescent home, or skilled nursing facility (SNF) interchangeably. Under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) comprises of both nursing homes and convalescent homes. By definition, SNF is a long term care health facility that provides continual nursing and supportive care to individuals on an extended time to help with the activities of daily living. The staff of an SNF usually consists of RNs, LPNs and CNAs who work in collaboration of the residents’ personal care physician or facility medical director in caring for those who are injured, disabled, chronically ill, or sick. The services include a continual 24-hour care, dietary, social, rehabilitation, therapy, administration of medications, and pharmaceutical.
How is a Skilled Nursing Facility licensed in California?
In California, Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) is licensed by the California Department of Public Health. As a licensed facility, SNF must all the requirements of California nursing home standards. There are two types of Skilled Nursing Facilities: 1) Licensed 2) Licensed and Certified. In order for a facility to be “Licensed and Certified” for Medicare and Medi-Cal patients and reimbursements, it must be certified by the federal government. An SNL facility can be either For Profit as a sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporate as well as operating as a Non-Profit Organization.
